DAINGERFIELD, Texas – The Jefferson Bulldogs had their season come to an end last week, falling 80-66 to Mt. Vernon in the Class 3A-Region I I Area Playoff at Dangerfield High’sTiger Gymnasium.
Head coach Trenton Dowell’s first edition finished the year with a 25-8 record and as well the 16-3A District crown.Jefferson ran the table on the loop, finishing with a perfect 14-0 mark.
Last Tuesday the Dawgs got off to an un-customary slow start and trailed Mt.Vernon 15-9 at the end of the first quarter. The Tigers’ lead was in part to Brett Thomas and his three three-pointers. As it turns out, he had a few more in him.
Thomas went on to drain a whopping nine three’s, finishing with a game-high 32 points and balancing the 30-point night of Jefferson’s Dee Mitchell. The Bulldog forward had six three-pointers of his own – three of them in the fourth when the Dawgs our-scored Mt. Vernon 24-17 in a late rally attempt.
Mt. Vernon was up 34-23 at the half before Thomas went off in the third quarter with five of his treys. The Purple Tigers pulled away with a 29-19 advantage in the frame, giving them a 63-42 lead going into the final eight minutes.
Jefferson’s Mitchell hit a team-high 10 baskets and four-of-six free throws to build his 30-point night and got the most help from Grayson Early’s 14 points. Early’s court time was limited by foul trouble but the forward was strong enough inside to take 11 free throws,hitting six.
