LONGVIEW, Texas – In the end, it came down to free throws. Jefferson had a tough night at the foul line, converting just 11 of 24. Winona’s Wildcats made as many in Jefferson attempted and thwarted a fourth-quarter rally by Jefferson to claim a 60-57 victory in overtime.
The Lady Bulldogs season comes to an end at 21-10 with the Class 3A-Region II Bi-District loss but represents the second straight season in which Coach Mark Allen’s squad played into the post-season.
Tuesday night in Longview, the Lady Cats – third best in District 15-3A – may have their shortest player to thank for the trip into the area playoff round. Jose Barrera – all of five foot, three inches – was called on to shoot free throws for an injured Randaysha Hanson with just one minute remaining in the fourth quarter and Jefferson leading 45-44. The junior nailed both shots and briefly putWinona back in front before the horn sounded with both teams tied at 47-47. The two free throws were Barrera’s only points of the game.
Jefferson battled all night, however, to even get into the extra four-minute stanza. The Lady Bulldogs trailed 12-9 at the end of the first quarter and was down 23-21 at the half. They crept closer in the third, entering the fourth down only one at 31-30. Then it got crazy.
