HARLETON, Texas – Don’t look now,  but it’s starting to appear that Treston Dowell’s Bulldog basketball squad is the class of District 16-3A. Jefferson fans won’t have to wait long to find out though as White Oak’s Roughnecks – a perennial district contender in basketball – pay a visit to Bulldog Gym on Friday night.

The 24th-ranked Bulldogs (18-7, 8-0) coasted in their last two games, knocking out Beckville 79-48 in Jefferson before heading to Harleton and earning an 86-30 victory over the Wildcats. The Bulldogs – ranked 23rd last week in the Texas Association of Basketball Coachers’ poll – dropped down one spot even without a loss.

Tuesday night at Harleton, the Dawgs acted as though they were offended by the slight suffered in the polls and ran out to a 27-11 first quarter lead. The decimation continued in the second quarter, where Jefferson blasted the hosts 26-2 for a 53-13 advantage. The Bulldogs coasted the rest of the way, out-scoring Harleton 13-10 in the third and 20-7 in the fourth for the lopsided final tally.

Five Bulldogs finished in double-digit scoring with Grayson Early pacing the attack with 19 points. Cameron Hicks finished with 12 more and the trio of Curtis Henry, Dee Mitchell and Tanner Murphy all closed the night with 10 points apiece.

Maurice Rudd (nine points) and Todd Polver (seven points) weren’t far behind their teammates while Kepha Luster (four points), Jaron Kelly (three points) and Kylan Thomas (two points) rounded out the scoring. Thomas’ field goal in the fourth quarter put every Jefferson player into the scoring column.

Last Friday against Beckville, Jefferson raced out to a 24-10 first quarter lead and hardly looked back. The Dawgs led 34-21 at halftime, then outscored the visiting Bearcats 27-8 in the third and 19-18 in the fourth to build their 79-48 final margin.

Grayson Early (28 points) and Dee Mitchell (24 points) were crowd-pleasers…
