ORE CITY, Texas – The Jefferson Lady Bulldogs started the second round of District 16-3A competition pretty much the same way they started, with a victory over Ore City’s Lady Rebels. The 56-54 win also put the brakes on any kind of losing streak, coming one game after Jefferson fell out of a first-place tie with Elysian Fields in a 67-34 loss at EF.
At Ore City on Tuesday night, the Lady Dawgs (17-7, 7-1) looked like they might run away with the decision, but a late rally by the hosts quashed Jefferson’s 17- point lead late in the fourth when Miya Randle drained a game-tying threepointer with 40 second left in the game. Jayda McCoy’s bucket with nine seconds left in the game turned out to be the game-winner.
Jefferson ran out to a 17-8 first quarter edge and was up 30-13 at the half before Ore City mounted its comeback, starting with an 18-15 edge over the Lady Bulldogs in the third quarter.
Tierra Cook posted 10 points and the Lady Rebels got three-pointers from four players to knot the score at 54-54 before McCoy’s tie-breaking basket. Ore City out-scored Jefferson 23-11 in the fourth but still needed a little more.
McCoy’s big bucket was the capper on her big night – the senior finished with 22 points, fairly negating the impact of Cook’s 22 for the hosts. Ja’Kayla Jones finished with 10 points while Deivya Hodge and Jamya Smith each chipped in six more.
Elaina Langbartels had five in the game – including a three-pointer –While Ni’Linda Johnson (four points), Ja’Lisa Mitchell (two) and Tierra Hines (one) contributed as well.
Ore City hit eight three-pointers on the night…
