NACOGDOCHES, Texas – New Jefferson High boys’ basketball coach Treston Dowell has no fear.
Last week, the Dawgs’ new roundball boss took his squad to Nacogdoches for a date with the Class 5A Dragons and fell for the first time this season, 60-46.
Jefferson hung tough with the deeper squad, falling behind by double-digits only in the fourth quarter. Nacogdoches led 14-10 at the end of the first and 26-20 at the half, then edged another point ahead in the third before pulling away at the free throw line in the fourth quarter.
Grayson Early and Dee Mitchell did most of the heavy lifting, with Early posting a game-best 21 points and Mitchell dropping in 13. Trevor Murphy hit a pair of three-pointers late to finish with six points while Cameron Hicks added four and Maurice Rudd two points.
Nacogdoches had eight players reach the scoring column but got the most out of Tycolby Caraway and Jordan Upshaw, who each posted 19 points to lead their squad. The Dragons found their way to the free throw line, especially in the fourth quarter when they attempted 15 of their 22 foul shots. For the game, Nacogdoches hit 14-of-22 freebies while the Dawgs had just 11 attempts for the game, making five.
Dowell’s Dawgs head into this week’s Union Grove Tournament for games today (Thursday ), Friday and Saturday.
