Many memories stand out in local minds regarding the Jefferson Lions Club.
A portion of them were before a great number of our readers were old enough to remember; yet many others do. For some, the Lions Club were the people who owned the swimming pool, or put on musical reviews every year, but the Lions Club was so much more than many remember or have never been made aware.
They proudly have served our community for 70 years. They give of their time and efforts in many causes for our community and beyond.
Up through the late 1970’s, there were only men in the organization here. Now women are a part of the organization and often hold many of the offices.
There are many local charities and services which they provide for the community. Those include SPOT Vision Screening; Student Scholarships; Cub Scout Pack 220; Helping to provide exams and prescription glasses for students of Marion County who are in need of glasses; CASA; Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department; Jefferson Carnegie Library; Bell Ringers for the Salvation Army; Recycling Efforts; Pergola upkeep at Lions Park, along with many other youth and local causes.
There is a group of charities in which they participate called their 200% Charities. They include the Lions Club International Foundation, Leader Dog for the Blind, East Texas Eye Bank, Lions World Service for the Blind, Texas Lions Foundation, Texas Eye Glass Recycling, and Texas Lion Camp Charity.
The local Lions Clubs participates their own and in several other organization benefits. Most recently they brought in the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus as one of their own fundraisers as well as the upcoming Enchanted Forest at Lions Park during the Christmas season. In the spring, they are the Jury Wranglers for the Historic Diamond Bessie Murder Trial and also assist with the benefit which aids the Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department…the Fire Brigade Car Show.
The Bayou Bakery, at 201 Austin St., is their weekly meeting location. They invite you to join them at noon every Thursday. To join, contact them at (903)926-1469, or at P.O. Box 124, Jefferson, Texas 75657.
