Movie Review | Jack Reacher: Never Go Back “2016”

by Mica Wilhite

jack_reacher_never_go_back_posterJim Grant’s wife Jane gave Jack Reacher his name. One day he and his wife were grocery shopping and she observed, “Hey if this writing thing doesn’t pan out, you could always be a reacher in a supermarket.” He thought it was a good name for the self modeled six-foot- five main character he was developing for his first of now, twenty one novels, “Killing floor.”

Reacher enthusiasts also know that Lee Child, Grant’s nom de plume, constructed his main character specifically to be a knight-errant or noble loner. In a 2011 interview, Child said, “This idea of the rootless alienation has got to come from somewhere, and I noticed that the most alienated people are always ex-military, because it’s like going from one solar system to the other, it’s so different. So that was an easy choice: Make him ex-military”

“Jack Reacher: Never Go Back,” is the second story in the series to make it to the silver
screen. Thirty years after “Top Gun,” Tom Cruise is still a leading man who can carry a big Hollywood action thriller, and he does so again in this one. Cobie Smulders, best known for her television role in “How I Met Your Mother,” plays Major Susan Turner, commander
of the military police unit Reacher led before he left the military. Together, they work to stay alive and clear their names after being framed for murder and espionage.

While there are plenty of punches, kicks and the don’t worry-I-got-this presence that Reacher admirers love, this story adds some humanization with the presence of a potential daughter from a short-lived relationship fifteen years earlier.

“Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” is showing at the Marshall Cinema with a PG-13 rating for violence and action. Call (903) 935-5662 or visit www.Jimplecute1848.com for a full list of show times. Drift over to see it and enjoy it soon.
