OMAHA, TX – A multi-faceted offensive showing by Antwain Jimmerson’s Bulldogs – coupled with an increasingly aggressive defense – spoiled Paul Pewitt’s home opener, 58-33. Jefferson’s first win of the year was as eye-opening as their effort against Waskom.
Six different Bulldogs crossed the goal line at Brahma Stadium on Friday, scores which included a kickoff return for a touchdown as well as a defensive tally on a Pewitt punt play.
“I was really proud of our offense,” Jimmerson said. “(I) never felt like we got pushed around on the line and that makes so many other good things happen.”
The good things started with 8:04 to go in the first quarter when TyronWilliams dashed 11 yards on his first tote for Jefferson’s first touchdown. The sophomore’s night only got better – he followed Paul Pewitt’s answering touchdown with a 93-yard kickoff return for a TD, then later in the game outraced the Brahma defense for an 81-yard score. On the night, Williams racked up 156 rushing yards on eight carries to finish with 249 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns.
Paul Pewitt’s LaBrandon Mitchell kept the Brahmas close however, rushing for 153 of his game-high 243 yards in the first half alone. Mitchell crossed the goal line but once but he also put Pewitt in scoring position for Justin Hill’s 19-yard pass to Tyshun Mitchell with 2:34 left in the first to make it a 14-13 ballgame.
Thanks to Andre Boone’s two-point scamper from the “swinging gate” formation after Williams’ first touchdown, Jefferson stiff-armed Pewitt’s attempts at grabbing the lead and both teams traded touchdowns in the second quarter.
Boone first connected with T.Q. Jackson on a 21-yard strike for a 20-13 Bulldog advantage at the 10:12 mark, then the Brahmas came back with a 1-yard plunge by Lucas Hungerford with 8:40 left to make it 20-19. That one-point deficit at halftime would be the last time the Brahmas were close enough to read Jefferson’s license plate.
